Ricky l. - 9/10 : We visited Botin right after a noon Santa Misa service at the Cathedral Almudena-a relatively short walk that made us also ready to feast. The reservation at 1300 was acknowledged and we were ushered to a corner table for 2 near the wine cellar without waiting. Host and the waiter were super efficient but friendly and helpful. We ordered Pollo Pepitoria and Chipirones en su tinta. Both were muy delicioso and more than enough portion for either one of us but we did clean up the plates. Two minor comment on the food - we are rice-eaters and would have loved to have more rice to soak up the sauces; and the chicken dish - wished that additional care was exercised to minimize bone shards probably from chopping the chicken getting into the sauce. Other wise, our experience at the Botin was worth the time, effort and cost. Great job at keeping the resto running for 289 years !

Beatriz G. - 10/10 : We love El Botín. Even thought it is a tourist draw, the food, service and atmosphere are wonderful. This is the third time we have visited in 6 years and the food is still excellent as is the service. The food is very typical Madrid food and for the oldest restaurant in Spain, it's great it has
not become generic in any way. The staff is super friendly and very efficient. The building itself is worth the visit with it's narrow staircase and old wood and grotto basement level. If you do not have a lot of time in Madrid but want a special meal that will not break the bank, I highly recommend El Botín.

David S. - 5,5/10 : Went with family for a birthday, reserved well in advance because of the history and reputation. Was, unfortunately, rather disappointed with everything but the service (which was excellent). Very expensive fish soup starter: the fish was very overcooked (and so quite dry), the broth was so-so. Had clams as a main, with a mushroom side. Both were very ordinary. Spouse had suckling pig, allegedly their specialty, but it too was quite ordinary (missing salt?). Daughter had lamb that was also very ordinary: was not tender, needed salt. Dessert was a cheesecake (provided for my birthday) that was actually good. But it did not make up for the very disappointing gustatory experience, something I was very much looking forward to. Had a better meal across the street at a tapas bar hours before.

Angelique H. - 5/10 : It is cool to say you have been to the oldest restaurant in the world however that's where the magic ends. Botin is very traditional old world style cuisine but the food was very underwhelming. I had fillet mignon which was more like a sirloin – tough and overly bloody. I asked for the filet to be cooked medium but it came extra raw. PS I am from Texas and if there's one thing I know – it is how to cook a proper filet. My brother ordered the prawms but for US$25 six large prawns on a plate with nothing else is a bit excessive. The only person who enjoyed their meal was my brother's friend who ordered the suckling pig- that was yummy! Also, the sangria was lovely. It was an acceptable experience but all in all it was not everything for which I had hoped.

Santiago P. - 9/10 : Everything was perfect except the first waiter that seemed rather annoyed on his first visit to the table that we weren't sure about getting a whole piglet for the table. So when asked how it would come he said it was too much, which it wasn't for a party of three. Thankfully another waiter came that was very pleasant , warm and accommodating and earned his 20% gratuity whis is above the traditional 15%. He even let us go down and visit the wine cellar that was in a room from the 1400s! Everyone else on the staff had a great smile and very greeting. TO top it off the doorman took a picture of my whole family in front of the restaurant despite a very busy time at the restaurant. Must experience at least once when visiting Madrid.

Shawn R. - 10/10 : Botin is a wonderful place to experience a traditional Madrid/Spanish meal. The atmosphere, wait staff and dishes are all perfect representations of how dining out might have been 200+ years ago (it only takes a little bit of imagination to replace the modern lighting with candles and lanterns).

Aileen U. - 10/10 : Birthday dinner for my father, and we were all very happy with our chosen meals, suckling pig, lamb an a fish stew. The desserts were delicious as well. Good size portions, and very tasty! Madrid is very hot in july, but especially the downstairs rooms can be quite cool, so it can be wise to bring a cardigan or something even if it is 40ºc outside... ;) The waiters are attentive, and most speak fairly good english.

Matthew P. - 5/10 : Atmosphere was great (in the cellar dinning room) but food was expensive and did not taste good. We ordered three dishes, all of which were house specialties, and they all tasted very bland. We would rate the food as a D+/C-. We had better food at all other places in Madrid. Save you money and eat at other venues. Like reviews said, it's a tourist attraction and I can see why. No locals eat there because it's over hyped, expensive, and below average food.

Phillip C. - 6,5/10 : Good food but a bit touristy for my preferences. The pig itself was good but in all honesty, suckling could be greatly improved with more care. I feel the restaurant bends too much to tourist preferences vs. being best in class at making great suckling pig.
